How to Find Her Ring Size Without Spoiling the Surprise

Finding her ring size secretly is one of the most genuinely stressful parts of planning a surprise proposal — and it does not need to be. There are five reliable methods that work without asking her directly, and a safety net that makes getting it slightly wrong a non-issue. The best method depends on how close the proposal is, how observant you have been, and how much you trust her inner circle.

Five methods that work — ranked by reliability

1. Borrow a ring she already wears on the same finger

The most reliable method by a wide margin. If she already wears a ring on her left ring finger, borrow it while she is asleep or away and either take it to a jeweler or trace the inside circle on paper. A jeweler can size it in under five minutes from the tracing alone. If you cannot borrow the ring, press it lightly into a bar of soap or a piece of soft clay to create an impression of the inner diameter — that works just as well. The critical detail: it must be a ring she wears on the left ring finger specifically, not a ring she wears on another finger. Ring sizes vary significantly from finger to finger on the same hand.

2. Recruit her sister, mother, or best friend

The second most reliable method, and the one with the highest success rate for proposals in Nigerian families — because there is almost always someone in the inner circle who can be trusted with the information and will not let it slip before the moment. The approach: tell one trusted person what you are planning and ask them to find out her ring size discreetly. The cover story that works best is a shared jewelry shopping trip under a neutral pretense — "help me pick out something for my own ring" or "I want to buy you something, let's try on a few sizes." Most women will tell a trusted friend or sister their size freely in that context without connecting it to a proposal. The risk with this method is the same as with any secret shared between two people: it may not stay a secret.

3. Use a printable ring sizer

A free printable ring sizer — available as a PDF from most reputable jewelers including Azarai — can be matched against a ring she owns when she is not present. Print the sizer, cut out the strip, and hold it against the inside of her ring to find the matching size circle. This method is accurate to within half a size when the sizer is printed at the correct scale (confirm the print settings are set to 100%, not "fit to page," which resizes the document and makes every measurement wrong). 4. Pay attention while shopping together

If she has ever tried on rings — at a jewelry store, at an owambe where someone was showing off a new piece, at a market, anywhere — and you were nearby, you may already have the information you need. Think back. Did she try something on and comment on the fit? Did a ring go straight over the knuckle or stick at it? If so, ask the jeweler at the time of the proposal what size typically behaves that way. This method requires memory and observation, which is why it works for some buyers and not others.

5. Estimate from her body type and rely on free resizing

The fallback when all other methods are unavailable. Most adult Nigerian women fall between size 6 and size 8 on the international ring size scale — size 7 is the single most common size. If she has slim, narrow fingers, size 6 is the most likely fit. If her hands are average, size 7. If her fingers are wider, size 8. Propose with the most likely size, and know in advance that Azarai resizes any ring purchased from us at no charge after the proposal. A ring that is slightly too big or too small on the day is a 48-hour fix, not a problem.

The Azarai Position

A slightly wrong size is not a proposal disaster. We have resized hundreds of engagement rings in the weeks after proposals — it is one of our most common post-proposal services. The ring being on the wrong finger during the proposal is a different problem. The ring being one size too small is a story the couple tells for the rest of their lives.

What if you get the size wrong?

Most rings can be resized within one size up or down without any structural issue. The exceptions are full eternity bands (stones all the way around, no metal to add or remove) and tension-set rings (held by pressure rather than prongs — the tension is calibrated to a precise size). For every other setting type — solitaire, halo, pavé solitaire, three-stone, bezel — resizing is a standard service that takes 7–14 days.

At Azarai, we offer complimentary exchanges within 7 days. Bring the ring in to any showroom in Lekki, Ikeja, or Abuja, and we will exchange it at no charge. The only thing required is that the ring is an Azarai ring and that you bring her in with you for a precise measurement — resizing based on the buyer's estimate of the problem tends to result in the ring being resized twice.

What is the average ring size for Nigerian women?

Based on Azarai's sizing data across our Lekki, Ikeja, and Abuja showrooms, the most common engagement ring sizes for Nigerian women are:

Finger type Most likely size US size equivalent
Slim, narrow fingers Size 6 US 6
Wider, fuller fingers Size 8 US 8
Larger hands Size 9–10 US 9–10

These are starting estimates only. The only accurate measurement is a physical ring sizer on the actual finger. Finger size also changes with temperature, time of day, and hydration — morning sizes tend to run slightly smaller than evening sizes.

Nigeria Context

Ring Size, the Introduction, and the Proposal Timeline

In Nigeria, the proposal often needs to happen before the introduction ceremony — and in many Lagos and Abuja families, the introduction can be scheduled faster than the man planned. If you are proposing and then immediately facing an introduction date set by the family, the ring needs to fit well enough to be worn to the introduction. A ring that will not go past the knuckle cannot be worn to the introduction. A ring that is one size too large and needs to be held in place during photos is not ideal. Size 7 as your default guess is correct for most Nigerian women — but if you have any method of confirming the size before the ring is made, use it. The introduction is the ring's first public appearance. Get it as close to right as you can.

The most common approach among Nigerian couples in 2026 — particularly in Lagos — is simply to involve the woman in the ring selection process before the proposal, leaving only the moment of proposal as the surprise. This removes the sizing problem entirely. If you are reading this guide because you want to keep the ring a complete surprise, all five methods above are viable. If you are flexible on the surprise element, visiting Azarai together before the proposal is the simplest and most reliable solution to every sizing, style, and budget question simultaneously.

Frequently asked questions

Borrowing a ring she already wears on her left ring finger and taking it to a jeweler for measurement — or tracing its inner circle on paper. This is accurate to within a quarter size and requires no guesswork. The second most reliable method is asking a trusted friend or family member to find out the size discreetly under a neutral pretense.

Size 7 is the most common engagement ring size across Azarai's Lagos and Abuja showrooms. Size 6 is the most likely fit for women with slim, narrow fingers; size 8 for women with wider or fuller fingers. These are starting estimates — the only accurate measurement is a physical ring sizer on the actual finger.

Yes — most rings can be resized one size up or down. Azarai resizes any ring purchased for a small charge after the proposal. The exceptions are full eternity bands and tension-set rings, which cannot be resized without re-making the piece. For solitaires, halos, pavé rings, and three-stone rings — the most common engagement ring styles — resizing is a routine 7-14 day service.

Yes — significantly. Most people's dominant hand is slightly larger than their non-dominant hand, and ring sizes vary between individual fingers on the same hand. A ring worn on the right index finger tells you almost nothing about the size of the left ring finger. Only borrow a ring she wears on the left ring finger specifically — or the same finger on the right hand and adjust by half a size smaller for the left.

Size up. A ring that is slightly too large can be held on the finger for the proposal moment and resized afterward. A ring that is too small cannot go past the knuckle at all — which creates a problem at the proposal and at the introduction ceremony. When uncertain between two sizes, choose the larger one.
